All, Site Optimization

Users never look at anything that looks like an advertisement

An eyetracking research from useit.com shows users rarely look at display advertisements on websites. The heatmaps below show the areas (in red) where users look the most:

Banner Blindness

As you can see, banners are completely ignored by users. I think this should be something to keep in mind when designing a new Website. Too many people overload their Web pages with advertisements. It only creates visual noise and keeps visitors away (check About.com and you will know what I mean).
