In my search for a new text editor, Prezrok, a Twitter user, recommended me to have a look at E-TextEditor. After I watched their Screencast on their home page, my first impression was “Wow! That’s it”. That’s the text editor I have been looking for so long for Windows.
I have tried all the text and WYSIWYG editors you can think of for Windows: Dreamweaver, PSPad, Blueflish, NVU, Webuilder, Notepad++, Amaya, Aptana… but none really met my expectations of what a text editor should be. Don’t get me wrong. Some of them are really good editors… just not what I was looking for.

I’m a big fan of Notepad++ as it meets my needs, but i’m always interested in trying new things.

Vim beats every text editor hands down.
Vim is available for PC, OS X and linux so if you are ever on a different environment it’s the same consistent experience.
Once you learn the commands it is hard to go back to anything else.

Some people say so but I am definitely not a Linux guy. I still like to click on a button to do something instead of writing a few command lines.

Soon you will curse the day you bought e, it is an extremely promising editor, but its startup speed, will start with time, to decrease, the more you use it, the slower it starts up, then you will not have multiple projects support, not even multiple e instances…, then you will get back to eclipse(or visual studio) and notepad++ combination for light text editor.
it is faaaar from textmate.

It seems very interesting but for now, i prefere use Aptana wich is my favorite even if he’s not very light :/

Aptana is a very nice IDE but they miss a simple function such as Word Wrap. That’s the only reason why I don’t use their editor. It is very uncomfortable to scroll horizontally to check a long line. I will switch to Aptana the day they fix that.

I must say i have always been a big fan of Dreamweaver but it is a very very resource hungry program, and running Photoshop and Dreamweaver at the same time is a hard thing to do… so i am always on the look out for new things to try especially if they have a trial first

I’ve had the slow down with E that iongion noticed above… if not for that I would absolutely LOVE it. I’m not far off from buying a Mac just so I can have Textmate! hah!
Anyway, another one to keep an eye on is InType (http://intype.info/). They seem to only have a couple guys working on it, so releases are few and far between. They have slowly been working on a new release that, so far, looks very promising. If they can ever get to a 1.0 release I’d definitely spend the money on it.
Good luck with E! If you have any thoughts on it in a couple weeks, good or bad, I wouldn’t mind seeing a follow-up review… thanks!

E-texteditor starts to slow down as Iongion predicted and it has a very annoying syntax highlighting bug but apart from that it is still a promising text editor.
I tried Intype. Interesting! It looks very much like E but with less options. I will keep an eye on it.

i said that because it is the truth, if one feels different let it come with arguments.
don’t get me wrong, i am not bashing the software, i bought it and i am still using it from time to time. i know there is a single person behind it and that it is understandable that the progress is slow, but so it happens for textmate from my understandings.
Sean, it seems you are not the only one considering buying a mac just for the sake of textmate
, but this makes it the most expensive text editor in history

As I used to work on textmate during a mac experience, I was very interesting in E. But as it seems becoming a hungry program with time, I’ll keep using my PSPAD waiting for improvements of E.
I’m a big fan of PSPAD. All is there for me :
- word wrap
- autocompletion for many languages
- drag and drop of file straight in code generating clean and tight code
- tag and function auto-close and closure highlighter (wich is very practicle)
- Code browser
- A realy good search tool through file, document, project etc.
The only few things I miss there.
- Display of files dependency as we find on dreamweaver
- the save ftp does’nt save in the exact folder you have to stipulate the folder first to establish the scope whereas you already defines a ftp root for your project.

I have tried PSPAD a few times but it could never convince me to use it. Maybe it is just not the right editor for me.

I agree with everyone in one way or another, everyones needs differ and so will their IDE/Editor. Depending on my project at hand i use a variety of editors/IDE’s ranging from Developers Notepad, Aptana Studio, WeBuilder, Komodo Edit, Visual WebDev 2008.
Usually that covers all my environments from simple text editing to larger projects. All in all i haven’t tried this editor but will have a shot at it now, maybe it will find its way to my toolkit and one of the above get dropped.
